There are several ways to guess the meaning of a new word, among those is determining parts of a word like suffixes. Suffixes are added to the end of a word. Suffixes usually do not change the actual meaning of a word, but they change the function of a word. They are attached to verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives and change their parts of speech or make new words out of them. Chapter one introduces adjective makers, chapter two noun makers, and chapter three verb makers.
Many words in English contain Latin and Greek roots. These roots convey the basic meaning of the word and they occur repeatedly throughout the language. Knowing these roots will help you determine the meaning of words with which you are not familiar. The most common Latin and Greek roots are given in the fourth and the fifth chapter of this book.
